Roosevelt SkerritDominicans have been told that they have a “responsibility” to pull their resources together and work diligently towards building the country.Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit addressed the issue of diligence at work, reminding citizens to give their employers a “fair day’s work”.“All of us in this country must recognize that we have a greater responsibility to our country; you’re not working for me, you’re not working for my party which I have the honor to lead, you’re working for the people of Dominica…If we want to build Dominica then we must put our efforts together”.He implored citizens that they must put their party preferences aside if they are interested in building Dominica.“All of us will suffer if we do not exercise diligence and responsibility in what we do. All of us will suffer if we do not recognize that we have to put our country first and our personal differences aside. It comes to the point of a greater desire to do more with the time that we have, to allow there to be a greater output from each one of us as individuals in this country”.Mr. Skerrit highlighted punctuality as another area in which he believes citizens are falling short of working diligently. He noted that with a “small open economy” as is the case with Dominica, punctuality and diligence at work is “critical”. “This is why I believe the issue of punctuality, the issue of starting functions on time, the issue of people coming to work on time and not leaving before time is critical. We cannot come to work when we want, how we want and then when we come to work we spend time doing all sorts of things and then we want overtime. If we give our employers the eight hours which we are paid for then there is no need for any overtime in my respectful view”.Mr. Skerrit also explained that with the effects of the global financial crisis and the uncertainty of the financial sector, citizens should “ensure” that they given “even more to the state” than before. This he believes will “set a very clear example to succeeding generations that diligence and punctuality are very critical”.He also emphasized that he does not wish to “criticize anybody” but only “remind us of that important point that we have to be more diligent”.
