Erik Deutsch Shares Live Video For “Firefly” Ahead Of Album Release [Premiere]

first_imgBrooklyn based pianist Erik Deutsch has played with so many talented musicians and even tours with Leftover Salmon, but, for his next release, the artist is taking a different approach. Due out November 18th, the new album Creatures sees Deutsch as a solo pianist, stripping down his instrumental compositions to their essence. Deutsch was able to break away from his hectic touring schedule, finding time for an intimate performance on a snow-laden night in Boulder, CO.Creatures will be released in both CD and DVD formats, allowing fans to experience this intimate recording and really connect with Deutsch’s sentiments. The pianist bears his soul in each song, including one of his earliest efforts, “Firefly.”Says Deutsch, “‘Firefly’ was one of the first songs I wrote when I moved to NYC. I sat down with the idea of channeling an astral campfire song — as if you were camping on the moon. Unlike most of my songs, this one came right out (I probably finished it within the hour). This is what I’ve always appreciated about this song: it’s quirky simplicity, clarity, and malleability, which over time has translated to a variety of different ensembles and musical situations. With that in mind, there was no question that “Firefly” was the opener for Creatures, for a number of reasons, foremost being my comfort level with the song. The Creatures concert was most definitely a high stress situation: performing, recording, and filming in front of a live audience left only a small margin for error, and admittedly I was feeling that pressure a little more than expected that night. “Firefly”, with its drone-like opening vamp, was the perfect way to ground myself, land in the room, and dive head-first into the concert. I’m happy with how it worked out and I’m excited for people to hear the music that came from that snowy night in Boulder, CO!”You can watch the premiere of Deutsch’s live performance of “Firefly” in the video below. You can find more information about the album in CD form via Bandcamp, and in video form via Vimeo.
