Every pet was individually blessed, by name, by clergy members. Christ Episcopal’s youth group prepared dog biscuits for them, as well.Associate reverend Catherine Collier said the event is done in honor of the Patron Saint of Animals, Saint Francis of Assisi.“Saint Francis was born several hundred years ago and lived in a monastery,” Collier said. “He believed in the beauty of creation and he saw the beauty of creation in animals.”During the service, some of the youth sang songs and Rev. David Meginniss, head pastor of Christ Episcopal, delivered a sermon on the importance of pets and the connection between pets and the teachings of the Bible.“I love this event,” said attendee Wes Youngson. “A lot of people do not realize , but one of the best ways to show unconditional love is with an animal.”The Human Society of West Alabama also brought several adoptable pets to the event, while the church collected pet food, old towels and other supplies as donations. Blessing of the Animals is a national affair, with its official day being Oct. 4.last_img read more
