Ex-striker SLAMS Arsenal’s dressing room culture: ‘Players are too COMFORTABLE!’

first_imgFormer Arsenal striker Alan Smith has slammed the ‘culture’ in the Gunners dressing room, saying the players are ‘not pushed enough’ and are ‘too comfortable’.Supporters have been vocal in their frustration of the team this season after seeing another Premier League title bid go up in smoke, and they made their opinions clear with a mass protest at Thursday’s clash against West Brom.TV cameras showed large areas of seats unfilled, with reports claiming around 2,500 season ticket holders returned their tickets for the game – which ended 2-0 thanks to an Alexis Sanchez brace. The win kept Arsenal in third place and boosted their hopes for a Champions League spot, yet that won’t be enough to sate fans’ need for silverware. Back-to-back FA Cup wins seemed to have merely paved over the cracks – it’s the Premier League they want. And former Gunners star Smith insists the attitude of the players needs to be addressed before they have any chance of ending the club’s 12-year wait for a league crown.Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, Smith – scorer of over 100 Arsenal goals – said: “I think the culture at the club is all wrong.“I don’t think the players are pushed enough. I don’t think there are enough fingers being pointed, even between the players in the dressing room.“I don’t think there’s enough confrontation between the lads – it’s all a bit too comfortable.“That’s got to change.”Alex Ferguson tasted almost success after success in his time in charge of Manchester United, and wasn’t afraid to give his players the notorious ‘hairdryer treatment’.And Smith suggests Arsene Wenger has been too soft on his stars during his 20 year reign, and concedes it may be time for a change in the hotseat. He added: “I’m not calling for Wenger’s head, he’s done so much for the club, but 20 years is a long time to be there and maybe he and the board should come to a mutual decision.  “Listening to the same voice for so long, sometimes it can go in one ear and out the other.” Arsenal’s stars have come under-fire from fans for their failure to maintain their title charge this season 1last_img read more
