MacKenzie     Save this picture!© Iain D. MacKenzie This project is the conversion of a late 19th century former grocery warehouse into a 2 level, one bedroom residence. In the mid 20th century it had 35 years of use as an engineering workshop before being converted to an artist’s studio and residence in the 1970s. Save this picture!© Iain D. MacKenzie The property has 2 street frontages, allowing clear separation of pedestrian and vehicle entries. The new front door is located in the former loading dock at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, adjacent to a heritage listed sandstone wall. The entry is defined by a full height steel plate portal, adding to the palimpsest of former window openings and recycled brickwork that make up this façade. Save this picture!© Iain D. MacKenzie Internally a 1.7 metre height difference between the 2 streets is utilised to create the tall volume of the living space, with its’ floor to ceiling wall of books. The kitchen occupies the half level above, overlooking the living area and is screened by a black steel plate structure incorporating a built-in black leather bench seat. The garage opens off the kitchen, with its’ internal dimensions defining the major strategic move within the design. Once the guest bathroom/laundry/storage and the stair opposite were deducted from the internal width, together with the minimum width required for the garage, the remainder was 10 millimetres with which to construct the wall between the garage and stair. This led to the adoption of the 10 millimetre thick steel plate structure that flows through to the entry portals, the kitchen surround and bookcase. Save this picture!© Iain D. MacKenzie All existing structure has been retained, lined and painted white, while all new elements are painted black. This concept is carried through to the black and white rubber flooring. All joinery is finished in black anodised aluminium, including the bathroom on the upper level, which maintains the datum established by the height of the original window openings. The clear glazing above allows light from the new clerestory window to illuminate the formerly dark centre of the deep open planned space. Internally the bathroom is lined with Corian on both walls and floor. Save this picture!© Iain D. MacKenzie The main street façade reinterprets the original but in steel rather than timber, with the address spelt out in water jet cut steel letters reflecting the original engineering workshop signage. The contrast between the precision of the steelwork and the patina of the original brickwork summarises the transformation from 19th to 21st centuries and from industrial to residential. JRAD Debuts Spacehog’s “In The Meantime” & Muddy Waters’ “Walking Through The Park” In NYC [Video]

first_img[Video: monihampton]For set two, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead picked up right where they had left off, with a jam eventually landing in the beloved classic “Truckin’” opening the frame. Notably, with the sun down and the stage dark, the entire second set featured “liquid light projection” by Mad Alchemy, which only augmented the psychedelia-drenched performance. The group built “Truckin’” into a rumbling take on the other one, moving the tune into the traditional one-two hit of “Help On The Way” into “Slipknot!”, though inevitably giving the combination the JRAD treatment with innovative improvisations throughout, including a nod to the wildly popular pop-hit “Havana” by Camila Cabello featuring Young Thug. In a surprise twist that caused the crowd to go wild, the band next offered up their debut cover of Spacehog‘s “In The Meantime”. With the band firing on all cylinders, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead weaved a number of teases into the standout debut ’90s cover, including what seemed to be a tease of the Grammy Award-winning 1999 hit, “Smooth” by Santana featuring Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty off the multi-platinum album, Supernatural.“Slipknot!” > “In The Meantime” > “Terrapin Suite” On Thursday night, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead hit New York City’s Prospect Park as a part of the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn Festival, marking the Grateful Dead tribute’s final 2018 appearance in the New York City area. With thousands of people in attendance, New York showed up in droves to see the band off before they inevitably return in 2019, coming close to selling out the massive outdoor venue. For the group’s first set, the band threw out a non-stop run of fan-favorites, opening with an energized rendition of “Bertha”—which recalled elements of Pink Floyd‘s “Fearless” throughout— to get the audience moving as the rest of the crowd trickled in from the long lines winding outside the venue. From there, the band slowed things down, offering a heartfelt and stirring “Throwing Stones” ahead of a rolling rendition of “Black Peter”. Picking things back up, JRAD moved into an electrifying take on “The Eleven”, which was modified to start and end with the intro portion of the tune. From there, the band hit a groovy, thoroughly jammed “Feel Like A Stranger” before the group’s set-closing, feel-good “Franklin’s Tower”.“Throwing Stones” [Video: monihampton]Keyboardist Marco Benevento, reunited with the group after Leftover Salmon‘s Erik Deutsch filled in during the group’s time in Colorado last weekend, was given the opportunity to shine as the group moved into their stellar, psychedelic, and triumphant rendition of “Terrapin Suite”. After thoroughly teasing Radiohead‘s Kid A classic “Everything In Its Right Place”, Benevento welcomed the suite with an extended piano intro, with the rest of the band eventually joining as the group flawlessly performing the beloved collection, in addition to adding teases of the Simon & Garfunkel hit, “The 59th Street Bridge Song”, also known as “Feelin’ Groovy”, and the Benevento/Russo Duo‘s own “Becky”.“Walking Through The Park”[Video: Evan Pragliola]To close out the show in full, guitarist Scott Metzger opened the encore with a solo of his own. For the true meat of the encore, the group appropriately performed a standalone cover of Muddy Waters’ “Walking Through The Park”, marking Joe Russo’s Almost Dead’s first time ever performing the song, to close out the night.Setlist: Joe Russo’s Almost Dead | Prospect Park | New York, NY | 7/19/2018Set One: Bertha @ > Throwing Stones, Black Peter -> The Eleven # > Feel Like A Stranger > Franklin’s TowerSet Two+: Jam -> Truckin’ -> The Other One Jam -> Truckin Reprise -> The Other One -> Help On The Way -> Slipknot! $ -> In The Meantime % -> Marco Solo ^ -> Lady With A Fan  -> Terrapin Station -> Terrapin -> Terrapin Transit -> At a Siding & -> Terrapin Flyer & -> RefrainEncore: SM Solo -> Walking Through The Park *@ – With brief elements of “Fearless” (Pink Floyd)# – Semi Flipped version – started & ended with the “intro”$ – With “Havana” (Camila Cabello) Teases (Band)% – Spacehog Cover, First Time Played By Almost Dead^ – With a “Everything in Its Right Place” (Radiohead) Tease (MB)& – With a “59th Street Bridge Song / Feelin’ Groovy” (Simon & Garfunkel) Jam and and elements of “Becky” (Benevento Russo Duo)* – Muddy Waters Cover, First Time Played By Almost Dead+ – Entire Second Set featured Liquid Light Projection by Mad Alchemylast_img read more

Pinterest’s Visual Web Makes Way For Text

first_imgUsually, social networks determine how users use their products. But today Pinterest has unveiled updates that make its platform more accommodating to a function that its users have been wanting for some time. As a response to pinners’ increased use of Pinterest as a visual bookmarking platform for articles, Pinterest’s latest update will make it easier to pin the news. According to Pinterest, the site will be rolling out a new look for articles in particular, including the headline, author, story description and link to the source on the pin.A pinned news article that demonstrates the updated information.“The updates are aimed at making Pinterest a better place for people to save and organize articles about the topics they care about—such as science, travel, technology, parenting, and health,” a spokesperson said. Pinners who want to take advantage of the new look don’t have to do anything. Pinned articles will automatically update with the new look and information. What Pinners DecidedNobody doubted Pinterest’s ease of use as a platform for sharing fashion- or design-related images and ideas. But its use as a visual bookmarking platform has previously been embraced more by users than the company itself. While other platforms like bit.ly and Delicious have been specifically designed with article bookmarking in mind, Pinterest originated as a space for images first. But today there is no shortage of Pinterest boards with titles like “Articles to Read” and “Pin Now, Read Later”—for users, bookmarking long reads with a visual cue just makes sense. According to a Pinterest spokesperson, news sites including Buzzfeed have named the Pin-It bookmarklet as a top referrer of traffic. See also: Pin Now, Read Later: Pinterest As A Content Sharing PlatformThe update is an acknowledgement of this user-pioneered use case. It’s a direction portended by Rich Pins, an update earlier this year that added more textual information to certain types of pinned information. Pinterest may be synonymous with images, but text still rules the Web. Pinterest’s latest updates give users the best of both worlds. Right next to the glass is a shocking pink bra. Why is it placed there?  Well, we also don’t have any answer.Take a look at the video and Ms Pandey’s horrid way of cheering the football players.last_img read more
